On The Road with The U.S. Women's Alpine Ski Team
Dr. Sterett in Lake Louise with The World's Fastest Racers
A Week In Lake Louise with the World's Fastest Racers
Last week Dr. Sterett was in Canada with the U.S. Women's Alpine Ski Team. As Head Team Physician, The Knee Doc gets a chance to watch the world's best skiers do their thing in some of the world's most beautiful locales.
This year was notable for the absence of retired star Lindsey Vonn, who made Lake Louise her personal playground throughout the years. She had so much success at the mountain that they even named a run after her!
Variable Conditions and Blowing Snow At Lake Louise
But it's not all play, as Dr. Sterett is always ready to assist in the event of an injury, as are the safety staff and ski patrollers at the event.
With the variable conditions and blowing snow this year, the chances of a crash were increased. We are always amazed at how good these world-class skiers are at navigating these changing conditions.
But when you combine top speeds with a snow-blow course, accidents are bound to happen.
Some Comeback Kids & A Scary Crash For AJ Hurt
This year, the highlights were the return of some of our best skiers, including Alce McKennis and Jacqueline Wiles. Unfortunately, up-and-coming U.S. racer A.J. Hurt was injured after a crash and had to be airlifted out for further evaluation.
Alice Merryweather posted a solid start to the season, finishing 21st. Alice McKennis is back, finishing 27th, and Jacqueline Wiles just missed the points in her first race back from injury, finishing 31st. AJ Hurt posted the fastest first split time before crashing hard. She is OK but she will be sitting out in Saturday's downhill, pending further evaluation of a knee injury. -usskiandsnowboard.org
2020 Promises to Be a Great Season
The rest of the season promises to be a good one, with a mix of returning skiers coming back from injury to bolster the squad while exciting youngsters make the leap and start breaking into the team.
Not only that, but Mikaela Shiffrin continues her current run as the most dominant and exciting talent we have seen. What Shiffrin did last year was truly incredible, and she's already breaking records at a young age. We'll all be rooting for Mikaela as she continues to redefine what can be done in the world of racing.
