Dr. William Sterett

Shoulder Replacement Surgeon in the High Rockies

What Are the Types of Shoulder Replacements?

A shoulder replacement is one of the most common procedures in the United States, with over 70,000 surgeries performed a year. This surgery is typically recommended when the bone and cartilage in the shoulder become so worn down it impacts the patient's quality of life.

There are three common types of shoulder replacement surgery:

  1. Total: The ball and socket section of the shoulder joint are replaced with an implant. This is the most common shoulder replacement.

  2. Partial: When only the ball of the shoulder joint is replaced. The method is meant to preserve undamaged bone in the upper arm.

  3. Reverse: Recommended only in unique situations, this shoulder replacement is when the ball and socket positions are switched. The ball is attached to the shoulder bones while the socket implant is positioned at the top of the arm.

The goal of shoulder replacement surgery is to restore mobility and function in the shoulder joint. Dr. Sterett and his team at Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery always work with his patients to recommend a surgery plan that suits their lifestyle.

Osteoarthritis and Shoulder Replacement Surgery

The most common reason for a shoulder replacement is osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis of the shoulder is a degenerative condition, meaning there is no cure. During shoulder osteoarthritis, the cartilage (which covers the ball and socket) is broken down. This can lead to bone rubbing on bone, which results in the following symptoms:

  • Shoulder pain

  • Swelling in and around the joint

  • Decreased range of motion

  • Clicking, grinding, or cracking sensation

  • Development of bone spurs

Shoulder osteoarthritis typically occurs in people over the age of 50. it can be a hereditary condition or the result of past shoulder trauma (such as a torn rotator cuff or dislocation).

When Do I Need a Shoulder Joint Replacement?

While osteoarthritis cannot be cured, the painful symptoms can be managed through conservative treatment methods. However, once the disease progresses to the point where those methods no longer work effectively, it's time to schedule a consultation with Dr. Sterett and his orthopaedic team.

We recommend reaching out to Dr. Sterett to discuss if shoulder replacement is right for you when:

  • Your shoulder pain is so severe it makes everyday activities difficult or impossible

  • You experience shoulder pain even while at rest

  • Your shoulder weakness and/or loss of motion is preventing you from participating in activities you love

  • All nonsurgical options, such as physical therapy, have failed to provide relief

After evaluating the severity of your condition, Dr. Sterett will recommend a shoulder joint replacement that restores your function, relieves your pain, and gets you back to your active lifestyle.
