Women In Sports

As an orthopedic surgeon in Vail, Colorado, I have had the pleasure of being the head team physician for the US Women’s Ski Team since 1997, and have been one of the US Olympic Committees designated physicians for the past 4 Winter Olympics.  From Picabo, Bode, Lindsey and now Mikaela I have been so blessed to witness and be part of some pretty spectacular events.  In the Olympics, we have seen some fantastic American Hockey experiences, bobsledding and my introduction to short track speed skating with the rise of Apollo Ono.

We all have heard that women in sports have a much higher injury incidence than men, and that ski racing has a pretty spectacular injury history as well.  By being in the middle of these high risk professional female athletes I have been able to gain a great experience not only with treating these top level athletes, but having to make appropriate decisions about when it’s the right time to let the athlete return to the sport they love.
